Characteristics of Adult ADD/ADHD
- Inappropriate involvement in drugs and/or alcohol at some point in
life
- Multiple marriages & divorces, or too many romantic relationships
to count.
- Multiple automobile accidents or disproportionate number of tickets.
- Numerous job changes, multiple periods of unemployment, often self-employed
by age 35.
- Continuing/ongoing difficulties with organization (losing things, can't
remember things) and time management (continual lateness or forgetting appointments).
- Many adults with ADD/ADHD start higher ed programs, however only about
5% graduate.
- Ongoing difficulties with social relationships. Many adults with ADD/ADHD
have trouble maintaining friendships because of annoying behavior (interrupting
conversations) or irresponsible behavior (late for social engagements).
MYTHS of ADD/ADHD:
- ADD/ADHD doesn't really exist.
- Everyone has ADD/ADHD, so these people are just complaining too much.
- It's caused by bad parenting or too much TV.
- It’s caused by food additives or too much sugar.
- If my kid has ADD, and I give him drugs, he'll just turn to illegal
drugs when he becomes a teenager.
- Way too many kids are being give drugs when they don't really need
it.
- Kids with ADD/ADHD grow out of it by high school.
- Adults with ADD/ADHD are just lazy and shiftless.
